No quiero hablar de las movilizaciones y el cómo son en el Campus Juan Gómez Millas porque llevo tres meses de clases y creo que necesito estar más años aquí como para describirles con algo de objetividad cómo son las cosas. Por la misma razón, hoy les comentaré sobre un asunto que ha acumulado algo de polvo en la memoria de mis conocidos: el asunto del libro.
Cuando estuve en Cuarto Medio (el último año de educación secundaria chilena), una de las cosas que le comentaba a mis compañeros y familiares es que quería editar un libro. Tanto mis compañeros, como mis profesores y un montón de personas que me han conocido por medio de la web me han dicho que soy un buen escritor, lo cual yo también lo creo.
Durante el año 2010, me di el trabajo de buscar temáticas que me interesaran y escribir sobre ellas, el eje central era lograr relatos que identificaran al santiaguino común y corriente, que desnudaran la idiosincracia chilena urbana a través de anécdotas simples, viajes cortos y una que otra reflexión. Este trabajo lo expuse en algunos cursos de mi querido Instituto Nacional y fue una de las razones por las que elegí ser Profesor.
Ambas profesoras en la fotografía, Gloria Neculqueo y Marlene Ángel (¡un saludo para ambas!), fueron las principales -aunque no las únicas, claro está- personas que me instaron a escribir, o mejor dicho, a continuar escribiendo, a cultivar esta suerte de talento o don que el de arriba me dio para juntar letras y hacerme entender por esta vía.
En las presentaciones que hice en el 2010, recuerdo perfectamente haberles contado casi la mitad de mi vida -en el relato- a un curso de Primero Medio y también a un Octavo Básico. Al principio, yo pensé que no me tomarían en cuenta, que no se interesarían, pero para mi grata sorpresa fue todo lo contrario, al menos el 95% de los chicos me seguía atento en la lectura, se veían fascinados con las historias que les contaba y se sentían identificado. En el primer curso estuvimos alrededor de quince o veinte minutos conversando sobre una de las historias, de qué les había parecido, cómo les gustaría que fuera la sociedad, sus proyecciones, sus sueños. Fue algo maravilloso.
Ver a los niños felices diciéndoles que pueden cumplir sus sueños, que deben esforzarse para lograrlo, que si tienen obstáculos deben superarlos y que esto es posible, es un mensaje lleno de vida, vida propia. Mis relatos sí sirven para algo, a la gente le gusta cómo escribo y lo que escribo, aún cuando no se vea tan reflejado en este espacio que recién ando potenciando.
El problema de hacer un libro es el costo, especialmente cuando se trata del primer libro. Hay que reunir un capital importante para ver tus ideas plasmadas en un libro de papel y, conociendo mi mentalidad austera y pragmática, preferiría invertir ese capital en algo más productivo como hacer un curso de inglés o simplemente ahorrar por ahorrar. Por lo tanto, considerando la situación económica estrecha en la que se mueve mi familia, sería un desatino gastar en la creación de un libro y no me voy a morir por no ver un libro impreso con mi nombre.
Modo Subjuntivo ... y si...
Si fuese a una editorial, lo más probable es que me rechazarían, no porque el trabajo sea malo sino porque no podrían vender muchas copias. La gente chilena cada día está leyendo menos, ¿por qué habrían de interesarse en leer a un joven de diecinueve años? Es decir, obviamente hay gente que lo haría, pero son muy pocas personas, la gente suele leer los clásicos consagrados. Y para qué hablar de los jóvenes, con suerte nuestras generaciones leen lo que les pide el colegio.
Si hiciera una autoedición, tendría que gestionar el tema de la imprenta, la edición, las fotografías y la distribución por mi propia cuenta. La verdad es que soy un excelente pensador, pero sufro también del complejo chileno de no saber llevar muchas de estas excelentes ideas a la práctica. Además de que esta opción también implica un gran gasto de mi parte. Por lo que está medianamente descartada.
La idea que más me convence es...
En estos tres meses de la Universidad, lo que más valoro es el hecho de poder leer grandiosos textos académicos sin pagar más que las fotocopias o la conexión a Internet -en el caso de estos libros que están en formato PDF. Creo que es parte -sobre todo este último caso- de la democratización de la información que involucra la globalización y la masificación de Internet el hecho de que la gente consuma más cultura abaratando los costos en la mayor medida posible.
Por esta misma razón, la idea que más me suena como viable en la cabeza es formular el libro, hacer la maquetación con la ayuda de algunos amigos que hayan estudiado carreras afínes, tratar de hacer la portada yo mismo con las miles de fotografías que he tomado y lanzar el libro en formato PDF de forma gratuita para quien quiera descargarlo.
Los puntos a favor y en contra
Como todo en la vida, esto tiene sus cosas positivas y negativas. Comenzaré con las cosas buenas.
De partida, al ser un libro gratuito y que está en formato PDF.
1) Es más masivo y tiene más posibilidades de leerse que los cientos y cientos de libros que se encuentran en las bibliotecas y librerías nacionales.
2) La gente no podría piratear esta obra porque obviamente es gratis y el propio libro explicitaría que se trata de una obra sin fines comerciales.
3) El hecho de no tener que pagar nada hace que también mis relatos se conserven íntegros, con todos los errores que podría tener un principiante, lo que me parece que lo hace más humano y más verdadero que muchos de los relatos tijereteados. Súmele a eso, el hecho de que no tendría que rogarle a nadie para que me publicaran... pues yo no soy alguien que esté dispuesto a hacer eso.
4) El dinero deja de convertirse en un problema. El mayor gasto en el que incurriría sería el de registrar la obra en el Registro de Propiedad Intelectual para que no hagan plagio de mis ideas. Creo que no es mucho dinero y, si llegase a hacerlo, bien podría pedir una colaboración o una vaca para que me ayuden.
5) El espacio para los escritores chilenos y jóvenes es muy cerrado en las editoriales. ¿Para qué le voy a quitar la oportunidad de trabajo a un escritor que desea hacerlo profesionalmente si para mí la escritura es una de mis tantas aficiones?
6) Tratándose de un texto disponible en internet, perfectamente puedo ser ayudado por el fenómeno de "boca en boca" y que muchas personas lean mis cuentos y conozcan mi nombre. Creo que eso es mucho más importante que ganar dinero con un libro, al menos para alguien que recién empieza.
Vamos con los puntos en contra:
1) Se genera una segmentación etaria que no corresponde del todo a mi público objetivo. El libro tiene un público objetivo que va desde los 13 a los 100 años, pues habla de la identidad chilena en un lenguaje y con historias que cualquier mortal podría entender. Al hacerlo en formato digital, la gente que no es asidua al uso de computadores se vería limitada en su acceso a mis cuentos y yo quiero que todos tengan la posibilidad de leer(me).
2) Si alguien quisiera tener una copia física del libro tendría que imprimirlo desde su casa y bien sabemos que no es lo mismo tener un libro empastado y bonito a tener un libro hecho con papel fotocopia y anillado en cualquier bazar. Es cierto que para mí, este tema del formato del libro me es secundario pues yo soy práctico y me fijo más en los contenidos, pero no todas las personas son así.
3) Si alguien quisiera tener este libro en alguna biblioteca probablemente no podría ingresarlo porque no tendría ISBN. Me explico, el ISBN se saca cuando uno quiere imprimir este libro de manera comercial en una imprenta. Como yo no planteo hacer este último procedimiento, sería vano sacar el ISBN -que por cierto, no sé cuánto cuesta ni cómo se hace.
No sé qué opinan ustedes, los relatos están listos para ser compilados y maquetados para formar un libro. En lo personal, mientras menos dinero gaste yo, mientras menos dinero gasten ustedes y mientras más gente tenga acceso a la cultura y a mis escritos, yo me siento feliz, aún cuando no me vea en ninguna repisa o algo así. De todos modos, es un asunto absolutamente secundario, aún falta para que "Sobre el Amor y las Ruedas" se haga realidad.

It's official, it will comes several days of strike in my beloved Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities. As I mentioned, the reason is the high cost of the university education in Chile, among other reasons that are involved with structural problems of the chilean educational system.
I don't want to write about the students strike and how are these things at the Campus Juan Gomez Millas because I have had only three months of classes and I think that I need more time for write about it with some objectivity. For the same reason, I will comment about a subject that has gathered dust in the memory of my acquaintances: the book case.
When I was in 4º Grade of Secundary (the last year in the secondary education in Chile), one of the things that I commented to my classmates and familiaries is that I want to edit a book. Both my classmates, my teachers and other people that known me though the Internet told me that I am a good writer, thing that I believe too.
During 2010, I looked for themes that interest me for write about them. The centerpiece was to identify the Santiago's stories, nake the urban Chilean idiosyncracy through simple stories, short trips and a couple of thoughts. I exposed this work in some classes of Spanish Letters in my beloved Instituto Nacional (National Institute) and it was one of the reasons that I have to study for be Professor.
Both professors in the photo (see above), Gloria Neculqueo and Marlene Angel (greetings for them!) were two important people -but not the only, of course- that urged me to write, or rather, to keep writing, to cultivate this kind of talent or gift that God gave me to collect letters and make myself understood by this way
In the presentations that I did in 2010, I remember perfectly that I have told them about half of my life -in the story- to a class of First Grade of Secundary and Eighth Grade of Primary. At first, I thought they wouldn't take me into account, they would not be interested, but to my pleasant surprise was the opposite, at least 95% of the boys still watching me carefully in reading, they were fascinated by the stories I told them and they were identified. In the first class mentioned, we have been nearly 15 or 20 minutes talking about my stories, how they feel them, how they would like society in which they live, their projections, their dreams. It was wonderful!
Seeing the children happy by telling them that they can fulfill their dreams, they must effort to achieve their goals, that if you have obstacles they should pass them and win. This is possible, their dreams are possible. It's a message full of life, life itself. My stories do serve to something, people like how I write and what I write, even if they look as reflected in this space.
The problem of edit a book is the cost, specially when it's your first book. It's important to meet significant capital to see your ideas in a paper book. Knowing my austere and pragmatic mentality, I would rather invest the capital into something more productive like taking an English course or save for save. Therefore, considering the close economic situation of my family, it would be foolish to spend on creating a book and I will not die for not seeing a printed book with my name.
Subjunctive Mode ... And if...
If I go to an editorial, it's probably that they would reject me, not because my book is bad but because they could not sell many copies. Chileans everyday read less. Why should they be interested in reading a young of nineteen years old? I mean, obviously there are people who would, but very few, people actually read the classic enshrined. And what about young people, our generation only read what the school asked.
If I do an autoedition, I should manage myself the theme of the printing, publishing, photos and book distribution. The truth is that I am very good at thinking, but also suffer the Chilean complex of not knowing many of these ideas to good practice. In addition, this option also implies a large expense for me. It is fairly discarded.
The idea that convinces me most is ...
In those three months at University, what I value most is the fact that I could read great academic texts through photocopies or Internet -especially when these books are in PDF format. I think that it0s part of the democratization of the information involving the globalization and the spread of Internet to the fact that people consume more culture lowering costs as much as possible.
For the same reason, the idea that sounds me more viable is create the book, make the layout with the help of some friends who have studied design courses, make the book cover with photos that I take and publish the book in PDF format for free for anyone who wants to download it.
Favourable and negative points...
Like everything in this life, it has positive and negative things. I will start with the good stuff.
1) It is more massive and is more probably that people read it than the hundreds and hundreds of books found in libraries.
2) People could not falsifying this work because obviously it's free and the book itself would explain that this is a non-commercial book.
3) The fact of not having to pay anything which also makes my stories are kept intact, with all the mistakes that could have a beginner, which I think makes him more human and more real than many of the stories earwigs. Add to that the fact would not have to beg anyone to publish me ... because I'm not someone who is willing to do that.
4) The money ceases to become a problem. The biggest expense to be incurred would be to record the work in the Intellectual Property Registry to not make plagiarism of my ideas. I do not think a lot of money and if they do, it could seek a partnership or a "cow" to help me.
5) The space for Chilean writers and young people is very close to the publishers. Why I'll take away the opportunity to work to a writer if he/she want to do it professionally? For me writing is one of my many hobbies
6) Being a text available on the internet, well I can be helped by the phenomenon of "word of mouth" and that many people read my stories and know my name. I think that's much more important than winning money with a book, at least for someone who is just beginning.
The negative points...
1) The age segmentation that is generated does not correspond at all to my target audience. The book has a target audience ranging from 13 to 100 years, it speaks of Chilean identity in language and stories than any mortal could understand. Doing it in digital format, the people who are not frequent the use of computers would be limited in their access to my book and I want everyone to have the capacity to read (me).
2) If anyone would want a physical copy of the book would have to print from home and we know that is not the same as having a book bound and nice to have a book made of paper copy, ringing in any bazaar. It is true that for me, this issue of the format of the book is secondary to me because I am practical and I look more on content, but not all people are like that.
3) If someone wanted to have this book in a library probably could not enter it because they do not have ISBN. I mean, the ISBN is given when you want to print this book commercially on a press. Since I do not pose the latter procedure would be futile to get the ISBN, which by the way, I do not know how much or how.
I do not know what you think about, the stories are ready to be compiled and formatted for form a book. Personally, while I spend less money, while you spend less money and more people have access to culture and my writings, I feel happy, even when I do not see on any shelf or something. Anyway, it is a quite secondary matter, it still needs time to see "About Love and the Wheels" as a reality.

Ariel, te apoyo con esto del libro, como lo habíamos conversado anteriormente. Personalmente yo bajo muchísimos PDF para leer, me parece una manera muy sencilla y además masiva de lograr transmitir tus ideas...pero como bien dices, no es lo mismo un libro bonito que algunas hojas anilladas o abrochadas, pero en definitiva lo que cambia es el soporte material/inmaterial (qué raro suena eso). Creo que eso no altera la esencia del contenido.
Verás cómo lo solucionas, la edición es realmente costosa. Si llego a saber de alguna edición barata aquí, demás que te aviso.
